Ernest L. Lyons Memorial Field (Football, Track & Field)

Home of Kirkwood High School’s football and track & field teams, Ernest L. Lyons Memorial Field was created as a multi-use facility for the purpose of supporting educational and athletic needs of KHS students.

This facility is named after Ernest L. Lyons, legendary football coach and physical education teacher at Kirkwood High School. Lyons served as KHS’ varsity football head coach from 1928 to 1948. The field was originally named KHS Athletic Field, and was renamed Ernest L. Lyons Memorial Field in 1957.

Lyons Memorial Field features bleacher seating for 2,662 fans on the east and west sides of the stadium, with additional seating on grass hills surrounding the field. An eight lane synthetic all-weather track encloses the field’s all-natural grass playing surface. Lyons Field has one sand pit for long and triple jump, and a high jump and pole vault area. Other features include lights, an electronic scoreboard, a concession stand, and an equipment storage facility.

The site has gone through multiple improvement projects since its completion, including:
1993 – Drainage system renovation
1997 – New windows and siding for press box
2002 – Track resurfaced
2008 – New visiting team fan seating

Ernest L. Lyons Memorial Field is located on the west side of campus at the corner of Chopin and West Essex roads. Spectators can gain admittance into the stadium through entrances on the north and east sides of the facility.

Czapla Field (Field Hockey, Lacrosse, Soccer)

Named for celebrated boys soccer coach Frank Czapla, Czapla Field hosts all practices and home games for boys and girls soccer, field hockey, and girls lacrosse. In 1965, Czapla became the first boys soccer coach in school history. He spent 30 seasons at the helm of the boys soccer program, winning 287 games, four conference championships, and one district championship. Czapla also taught physical education at KHS.
Czapla Field features an all-natural grass playing surface, and two electronic scoreboards. With no permanent fan seating, spectators utilize grass hills on the south and east sides of Czapla Field to watch soccer, field hockey, and lacrosse matches.

Kirkwood Baseball Field (Baseball)


Kirkwood Softball Field (Softball)
Home of the Kirkwood High School softball program since 1998, Kirkwood Softball Field has an all-natural grass outfield and dirt infield. The outfield is enclosed by a four foot fence, with an electronic scoreboard just beyond the fence in right-center field. The softball team used the Kirkwood Baseball Field as its home from 1990 until 1997, and before 1990, all practices and home games were held at North Kirkwood Middle School.

Kirkwood Softball Field is located on the north side of campus at the corner of Chopin and Dougherty Ferry.


Fitness Center (Strength & Conditioning)

The 6,500-square foot Fitness Center is one of the largest of its kind in the state of Missouri. An area that once served as Kirkwood High School’s auxiliary gym, the center was renovated in the summer of 2008 and includes a state of the art weight room, dance studio, and offices for athletic department staff.
The weight room houses the strength & conditioning programs for all 23 varsity sports. It is equipped with five squat racks, five platforms, four benches, a full range of dumb bells, and numerous other types of strength training equipment. In addition to the weight room, this facility includes a 1,500-square foot dance studio that serves as a practice area for the cheerleading, pom pons, and wrestling cheerleading.

During the school day, Kirkwood High School’s physical education department utilizes the Fitness Center for instructional purposes.

Walker Natatorium (Swim & Dive, Water Polo)

The Walker Natatorium was funded by a grant from the Earl E. and Myrtle E. Walker Foundation. This generous gift provided the funds to build the first ever competitive pool on the campus of Kirkwood High School.

Kirkwood Park Tennis Center (Tennis)

Kirkwood Park Tennis Center, located in the northeast corner of Kirkwood Park, is the official home for Kirkwood High School’s boys and girls tennis teams. The center houses all practices and home matches, and is one mile south of the KHS campus.
Built in 1960, this site holds 10 regulation size courts, bleachers for fan seating, and a concession stand. Kirkwood City Parks and Recreation owns and operates the Kirkwood Park Tennis Center, and is constantly making upgrades and improvements.

The boys tennis team first utilized the Kirkwood Park Tennis Center in the 1960’s, with the girls team following suit when KHS added girls tennis in the fall of 1974.
